vexed.
I dont think i have ever felt this immense pressure and stress in my life, EVER BEFORE. suddenly i know how it's like to feel great responsibilities on your shoulders. For 18 years and a few months, i have been slacking my life away, giving minimum effort, expecting maximum results. Fortunately, luck has always been with me but this time, it ain't just about luck anymore. As they always say, it's 99% hardwork and 1% luck. If i dont wake up now, i never will.

with that said, can anyone help me solve this Primary 5 maths question please? my student is counting on me. thanks.

Question:
A fruit seller has 50 more apples than oranges. After selling half of the applies, there were 30 more oranges than apples. How many apples and oranges does the fruit seller have at first?

p.s. the answer is 270.

draw one unit for apples and oranges each. then apples got 50 more right. so you cut the apple thing into half. then the part where the orange is cut,the unit on the right is 30. so you just add accordingly.

A fruit seller has 50 more apples than oranges can be represented by:

y + 50 = x, where y is oranges, and x is apples, or y = x - 50

After selling half of the applies, there were 30 more oranges than apples can be represented by:

y=x/2 + 30

Since the value of y did not change:

x - 50 = x/2 +30 Add 50 to each side:

x = x/2 +80 Multiply each side by 2

2x = x + 160 Subtract x from each side

x = 160, therefore y = 110.
